In a wacky twist of fate, Toni and Cat two housemates from Melbourne have an inexperienced art thief mistakenly target their humble abode. Brace yourself for a dark comedy of errors as these unsuspecting friends are caught up in a hilarious case of mistaken identity.
Pickled follows Toni (a deaf immigrant artist living in Melbourne) and Cat (their best friend) as their apartment gets accidentally broken into by a naive art thief with the wrong address. Pickled is a two-year-long film project directed by Honour Marshall and produced by Eleni Modinos. It is a 12-minute-long film, and we have a full crew of talented, passionate filmmakers. Inspired by works like Everything Everywhere All at Once, Parasite, CODA and Knives Out, Pickled is a seamless blend of comedy and drama that surprises, resonates, and explores the depths of human connections. We are creating this film mainly for the deaf community, so they can see themselves more often represented on screen in a relatable sense. However, we are also making Pickled to remind young creatives to not give up on their craft, as well as the broader disabled community and young Australians.
One of the film’s key priorities is authenticity, especially in the representation of Toni’s abilities and her Deaf identity. The production team is collaborating with organisations like Arts Access Victoria and Auslan Stage Left to ensure accurate representation and provide a space that is inclusive and accessible. This involves an accurate depiction of Auslan, the Australian Sign Language, and an authentic portrayal of the Deaf community’s experiences. The film’s visual and emotional impact is a result of the collective talents of the creative team in directing, acting, cinematography, and production design. Pickled aims to evoke laughter, empathy, and thought-provoking reflections while defying genre conventions. Pickled celebrates authentic representation and reflects the diverse experiences of the Deaf community, resonates with a wide range of audiences, and encourages reflection, laughter, and a deeper appreciation for the intricacies of human relationships.
